CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
Developing drawing techniques and receiving creative encouragement is a personalized journey. I specialize in building and developing drawing activities based on your needs, and assist in your practice and progression through the learning process. The goal is for you to be able to render drawings that are your own unique visual expressions.
My educational offerings present and describe drawing techniques, and demonstrate those techniques clearly enough that aspiring creatives at any level can make it their own. Fifteen years teaching drawing at the college level has shown me that anyone can learn to draw if we break the process down into manageable steps. Throughout this creative process I offer positive feedback on your progress, successful tips for working through stumbling blocks, and methods for using photographs as a point of departure. If you have ever wanted to start a sketchbook or visual journal now is the time!
“I was comfortable learning hand drawing from Stephanie because she brought her humanness to each lesson. When she made a mistake she treated it like no big deal, and that showed me how it was a natural part of learning. It gave me permission to learn without the stumbling block of having to be perfect.” - Christena S.
GET WILD! NATURE JOURNALING CLASS
Jim Poling’s popular “Wildflower Walks in Black Mountain” have finished until next year and yet the classes are continuing. You still have the opportunity to take your wildflower and nature appreciation a step deeper as I bring my “Nature Journaling” classes to the Red House Studios & Gallery in Black Mountain.
In this drawing class, you will be provided with step-by-step instructions and demonstrations of drawing techniques that will help you observe and document your wildflower finds. Research shows that drawing is the fastest, most effective way to learn because it gives your brain so many different ways to engage with the subject. This fun and informative educational experience will expand your awareness of the natural world and inspire your creativity. All skill levels are welcome.

ONE-ON-ONE DRAWING JOURNEYS
“As someone who had never drawn before, I was surprised when I took classes from Stephanie. I learned hand drawing so easily! Inside a couple of hours I was drawing recognizable leaves and flowers. It inspired me to make drawing a regular part of my life.” - Mary C.
Learn the versatile and invaluable skill of hand drawing in these one-on-one classes. Together we will customize subjects to your areas of interest, and pace the drawing lessons to your comfort zone. If you are a beginner, we start by using graph paper and a pencil to define basic shapes using ‘dot-to-dot’ and ‘guidelines’ techniques. In this way you will learn to render shapes, proper proportions and spatial relationships. As your skills improve, you will combine these elements and begin developing compositions. When you are familiar with those techniques, you will refine your drawings using pen and ink. As your eye and hand skills advance you will start adding color through the use of design markers. The goal of these journeys, no matter what skill level you start with, is to enhance your ability to express your own unique creativity. Conquering the basics of drawing in fun and manageable steps provides you with the foundation to explore all other forms of visual expression. The sketchbook you will have created at the end of your drawing journey will be a personalized document of your creative growth.

DESIGN MARKER RENDERING CLASS
Learn how to use design markers to elaborate on and energize your line drawings! These color marker techniques will allow you to quickly achieve a more in-depth rendering through the addition of pattern and texture - allowing for vibrant representational drawings. You will work from a still life, executing several small finished drawings during the half day session. One of the advantages of using design markers is there is no prep or clean up time involved. This medium is perfectly suited to journal drawing when you are traveling and this class will allow you to create unique travel mementos.
